Painting faces for Day of the Dead is an opportunity to celebrate art and participate respectfully in a beautiful Mexican tradition. Cynnamon, featured in the photo above, is the lead face painter and the owner of Memorable Event Entertainment, and has been painting for Day of the Dead IN MEXICO, in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, every November 1st & 2nd since 2021. During this time, her team of professional face painters and makeup artists are booked all over the Southern California region for private appointments of 2-4 guests as well as Day of the Dead themed parties, where they will paint hundreds of people in one night!
Now-a-days, even the end of October is packed with a mix of Halloween and Dia de Muertos parties, where our teams of face painters are painting their little hearts-out, happily using their artisty to “decorate” each face like a decorative skeleton, which is also called a sugar-skull or, in Spanish, calavera.

Día de los Muertos Is Not Mexican Halloween
Because Día de los Muertos takes place close to Halloween, the two celebrations are sometimes grouped together. But they have very different meanings.
Día de los Muertos is rooted in Mexican traditions of remembering and honoring loved ones who have died. Families may create ofrendas (altars) with photographs, candles, flowers, favorite foods and meaningful objects to welcome the memory and spirit of those they love.
Rather than approaching death only with sadness or fear, Día de los Muertos reminds us that the people we love continue to be part of our lives and our stories.
It is a celebration filled with memory, color, symbolism, family and life.
The Art of Catrina or Sugar Skull Face Painting
One of the most recognizable images associated with modern Día de los Muertos celebrations is La Catrina, or the Sugar skull—the elegantly dressed and decorated skeletal figure that has become an important symbol within Mexican popular culture.
Today, Catrina-inspired face painting and sugar skull face painting and makeup can be incredibly elaborate and customized.
Our artists create designs incorporating beautiful details such as flowers, decorative patterns, jewels, swirls, color, skeletal elements and other artistic embellishments. We love asking our guests what symbol or color could be incorporated into the design in memory of a loved one that has passed, and it always help connect them to their heart and those they love that might not be here anymore.
Some guests want an entire face transformed, while others prefer a more delicate half-face design or something small and simple.

Meet Senaida: One of Our Día de los Muertos Face Painting & Makeup Artists
One of the face painters on our Memorable Event Entertainment team who especially loves this Day of the Dead makeup is Senaida, our professional face and body painter based in the Jurupa Valley/Pedley area of Riverside County.
Senaida is a multidisciplinary artist whose work includes illustration, murals, commissioned artwork, face painting and body painting with a specialty in painting sacred geometry.
As an artist with Mexican heritage, Día de los Muertos holds special meaning for her, and her artistic abilities truly shine through her intricate Catrina and sugar skull-inspired face paintings.
She's also bilingual in English and Spanish, like many of our artists, making her a wonderful addition to multicultural community celebrations and family events.

For larger festivals where many guests are waiting, artists can offer beautiful simplified half-face Day of the Dead designs that move efficiently.
For smaller events, guests may have more time for elaborate Catrina artwork with intricate details. When we have more time, we like to spend about 30 minutes on half faces and about an hour on full face day of the dead designs. And if the application of fake eyelashes and jewels is added, the time could be longer. We strive to make each person feel like a work of art!
